Dry Brushing & How It Benefits The Skin

Dry Brushing & How It Benefits The Skin

Our skin is our largest organ. One way to keep it smooth is to practice dry brushing.

Dry brushing is a skincare ritual in which you use a dry, firm-bristled brush on dry skin, usually before showering, brushing in long strokes, often towards the heart to exfoliate the body. It is rooted in Ayurvedic practices (sometimes called garshana) and has become popular in wellness and beauty routines.

Our Winter Rescue Set comes with a 100% natural bristle brush, so you can enjoy soft and smooth skin despite the harsh wintry weather that often leaves skin feeling tight and dull.

How Dry Brushing Benefits the Skin

Dry brushing is an easy, low-tech way to provide your skin with mechanical exfoliation. It can help make the skin feel smoother and more "awake" thanks to boosted blood circulation and the intention and mindfulness put into the practice.

Exfoliation & Smoother Texture

Dry brushing helps to brush away dead skin cell buildup, giving the skin a smoother, softer feel. By removing dull surface cells, moisturizers applied afterward can penetrate better.

Boosted Circulation & Glow

The mechanical motion of brushing can stimulate skin circulation, leading to a temporary plumped, flushed look.

Lymphatic Stimulation

Dry brushing is thought to activate the lymphatic system, and brushing towards the heart can increase lymphatic drainage.

Self-care & Awakened Skin

Beyond the skin itself, dry brushing can be an invigorating practice. This small ritual of self-care can provide moments of relaxation. Taking a few minutes each day for pampering can help to reduce stress and promote a feeling of well-being.

How to Dry Brush Effectively

A dry brushing session can contribute to a sense of well-being, as it creates a moment of ritual and reconnection with you body. All you will need is our 100% natural bristle body brush. Here is a simple guide on how to do it:

  • As the name suggests, you must always brush on dry skin. Do so before showering, so you can rinse off dead skin afterwards. Never use on wet skin as it can aggravate or damage the skin.
  • Use gentle, long strokes that move towards the heart. On legs, move upwards. On arms move inwards. On torso and abdomen, use circular motions. Avoid sensitive areas where the skin is very thin or tender.
  • Start slowly (e.g. 1-2 times a week), especially if you have sensitive skin; increase only if your skin tolerates it. Watch for redness, irritation or barrier damage.
  • Clean the brush regularly so it doesn't harbour bacteria. Apply our Body Lotion or body oil after you shower to lock in hydration.
  • Avoid brushing over sunburned skin, rashes, eczema or psoriasis patches, open wounds, or moles or warts, to avoid skin irritation or infection. Apply our Healing Spray to treat minor wounds, skin conditions and other skin problems.

If you enjoy the feeling of dry brushing, do so gently and pair your practice with a powerful moisturizer. As always, if you have an underlying skin condition, it is best to check with your dermatologist first.
